Google Analytics 4

GA4 key events, sessions and revenue, read every day

GA4 is the website side of each project, not another ad platform. Borealis reads the property's daily totals and channels up to yesterday and uses them to judge both the site and the ads that send it traffic.

Sessions and users

Daily visits and visitors. Sessions are compared with the property's own history, so a real traffic drop stands out from an ordinary slow week.

Key events

The events the property marks as key events, or the ones you choose for this client, and key events per session: the site's own conversion rate.

Revenue

The revenue GA4 records per day, so a fall in sales on the site shows up even when every ad platform looks fine.

Engagement and duration

Engagement rate per day, plus engagement and average session duration by channel and source / medium, to see whether the visitors each channel brings actually stay.

Channels and source / medium

Sessions, users, key events and revenue by default channel group, then by session source / medium or by the user's first source / medium.

Cost per key event, site ROAS

Total ad spend across the project's platforms divided by GA4 key events, and GA4 revenue divided by that spend, when both are in the same currency.

Example

GA4 alerts for the site and the ads behind it

Site alerts cover sessions, key events, conversion rate, revenue and engagement, and cross-platform alerts compare the site with your ads; here are three, with illustrative numbers.

Critical

Paid sessions per ad click down 48%

Clicks on the ad platforms held steady, but GA4 recorded about half as many sessions in its paid channels for each click. Usual suspects: a landing URL that redirects and drops the UTM parameters, a missing GA4 tag, or a consent banner blocking it.

Attention

Ad conversions +6%, GA4 key events −33%

The ad platforms kept reporting their usual conversions while GA4 recorded a third fewer purchase key events. The two never match exactly, but when they stop moving together, tracking changed on one side: check the GA4 tag, consent settings and each platform's conversion setup.

Opportunity

Site conversion rate up 27% on steady traffic

Sessions stayed at their usual level while GA4 recorded more generate_lead key events per session. With traffic flat, the gain came from the site itself; the channel breakdown shows which sources carried it.

Google Analytics 4

Connect GA4 with a read-only Google sign-in

Sign in with Google and approve a single permission, analytics.readonly: Borealis can read reports and nothing else, so it can't change the property, its events or its settings. Then pick the client's property and add it to that client's project, next to its ad accounts.

Borealis starts from the key events already marked in the property. If a client measures success differently, choose the events that matter; key events, the site's conversion rate and cost per key event are recalculated from them.

  • Read-only: analytics.readonly is Google's read-only permission for Analytics data.
  • Aggregated reports only: daily totals, channels and source / medium. No user-level data and no individual visitors.
  • Encrypted: Google's authorization is stored with AES-256-GCM, used only on the server and never sent to your browser.
  • Revocable anytime: disconnect in Borealis, which also revokes Google's authorization, or remove access in your Google Account settings.

FAQ

Questions about GA4 monitoring

How is this different from GA4 anomaly detection and custom insights?

GA4's anomaly detection and custom insights work inside one property, and custom insights need conditions you configure. Borealis needs no thresholds and reads the site together with the client's ad accounts, so it also catches ad conversions and key events drifting apart, paid clicks not turning into sessions and cost per key event rising.

Why don't my Google Ads conversions match GA4 key events?

They rarely do: each ad platform counts conversions with its own attribution, windows and dates, while GA4 counts events on the site. Borealis doesn't expect equal numbers; it alerts when their changes part ways, which usually means tracking changed on one side.

Does Borealis need edit access to Google Analytics?

No. Borealis asks only for analytics.readonly, so it can read reports but can't edit the property, its events, audiences or users.

Which GA4 events count as conversions in Borealis?

By default, the events marked as key events in the property. Your team can choose others for a client, for example only generate_lead and purchase, and Borealis recalculates key events, the site's conversion rate and cost per key event from them.
